What is 3D printing prototype?

3D printing prototype is the quick, easy, cost effective way to turn great ideas into successful products. 3D printing is an umbrella term used to describe all additive manufacturing process, that uses digital CAD models to literally add material together to ultimately create three-dimensional objects. Unlike subtractive manufacturing, where the object is achieved through the removal of material from a solid block, additive manufacturing constructs the object through successively depositing layers of material.

Benefits of 3D printing

• Geometric complexity at no extra cost, objects or parts are built in very thin layers allowing for highly complex geometries that are impossible via any other manufacturing process.

• Very low start-up costs, no need investment of tooling, as tooling cost is high.

• Customization of each and every part, 3D printing works best for rapidly creating functional prototypes and end-use parts that are high in detail

• Low-cost prototyping with very quick turnaround, YI HITECH rigorous quality control measures and commercial-grade equipment create highly precise parts every time.

• Large range of (speciality) materials, there are a number of additive manufacturing technologies available, each with their own advantages based on the layering methodology and material used – with a range of plastics and metals available.

Limitations of 3D printing

Lower strength & anisotropic material properties

Less cost-competitive at higher volumes

Limited accuracy & tolerances

Post-processing & support removal

Different types of 3D printing prototype

1. Stereolithography Apparatus (SLA)

Liquid photopolymer in a vat is selectively cured by UV light, SLA is most suitable for visual applications where an injection mold-like, smooth surface finish, and a high level of feature detail are required

2. Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

A high-energy source selectively fuses powder particles, SLS is used for both prototyping and small-batch production of functional plastic parts with good mechanical properties.

3. MultiJet Fusion (MJF)

Droplets of material are selectively deposited and cured.HP's Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) can be used for both prototyping and small-batch-production of functional plastic parts.

4. Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS)

DMLS produces high performance, end-use metal 3D printed parts for industrial applications in the aerospace, automotive and medical industries.

5. Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM)

Material is selectively dispensed through a nozzle or orifice. FDM is the most widely available 3D printing process, mainly used for low-cost prototyping and design verification with very fast turnaround times.

6. Polyjet

Polyjet produces parts of the highest dimensional accuracy with very smooth surface finish, used for visual prototypes.

Available 3D printing prototype materials

Below list is the popular printing material.

Nylon

High strength and impact resistance. Used for functional prototypes.

PETG

Good for mechanical parts with high impact resistance and flexibility. Sterilizable.

PEI ULTEM 9085

Engineering plastic, high performance applications, flame retardant.

Resin

High detail and smooth surface, injection mold-like prototyping.

Stainless Steel

High strength and stiffness, good detail.

ABS

Commodity plastic improved mechanical and thermal properties compared to PLA.

PLA

High stiffness, good detail, affordable. Good for low-cost & fast prototyping.

ASA

Good UV stability and high chemical resistance, preferred material for outdoor applications.

TPU

Shore hardness 60A-95A

Rubber-like material, suitable for tubes, grips, seals and gaskets.

Aluminum

Aluminum is a metal with good strength-to-weight ratio, high thermal and electrical conductivity, low density and natural weather resistance.
